Federal disaster assistance has been approved for northwest Florida communities affected by Hurricane Isaias, as insured losses from the storm reached $652 million. The declaration comes as local officials and residents continue to assess damage following the Category 2 storm's landfall near Destin earlier this month.

Federal Aid Approved, More Funding Under Review

The White House disaster declaration identifies all Panhandle counties south and west of Leon County as eligible for federal assistance. While the specific funding amount has not been disclosed, local officials have welcomed the announcement as a crucial step in recovery efforts.

U.S. Rep. Jimmy Patronis (R-Panama City) expressed gratitude for the declaration, stating it would help families access necessary resources. Walton County Emergency Management Director Jeff Goldberg emphasized the importance of the declaration for his community, noting that recovery efforts are ongoing.

Federal funding for hazard mitigation efforts and individual assistance remains under review. Gov. Ron DeSantis requested the assistance for 15 counties in the region on October 18, following the storm's impact.

Insurance Claims and Damage Assessment

As of Tuesday, over 7,000 additional insurance claims tied to Hurricane Isaias were reported, pushing the total potential insured losses in Florida to $652 million. The vast majority of the more than 62,000 claims logged by the state Office of Insurance Regulation were submitted in the western Panhandle, where the storm made landfall.

More than 52,000 claims are tied to residential property, with the remainder covering auto, commercial properties, business interruptions, and other business lines. Of the residential property claims filed, approximately 43% have been resolved. Just over 30% of the private auto claims and nearly 12% of the commercial property claims have been closed.

The counties with the highest number of claims include Santa Rosa County (nearly 29,500), Escambia County (just over 19,000), Okaloosa County (nearly 6,000), Walton County (2,300), and Bay County (2,200). More than one-third of the claims have already been resolved in all five counties, with Okaloosa County at nearly 50%.

Comparing Hurricane Isaias to Previous Storms

In contrast, losses in Florida attributed to Hurricane Michael in October 2024 were significantly higher, at $5.6 billion, with 385,146 claims filed. However, the impact of Hurricane Isaias underscores the ongoing vulnerability of the Florida Panhandle to tropical storms and hurricanes.

The approval of federal aid marks an important milestone in the recovery process for affected communities. However, the full extent of the storm's impact will continue to unfold as insurance claims are processed and additional funding decisions are made.

Residents and business owners in the affected areas are encouraged to stay informed about available resources and assistance programs as they navigate the challenges posed by Hurricane Isaias.
